Country/Language combination in subdirectory URL
-
Hello,
We are a multi country/multi lingual (English, Arabic) website. We are following a subdirectory structure to separate and geotarget the country/language combinations.
Currently our english and arabic urls are the same:
For UAE: example.com/ae (English Site)
For Saudi Arabic: example.com/sa (Saudi Arabia)
We want to separate the English and Arabic language URLs and I wanted to know if there is any preference as to which kind of URL structure we should go with :
example.com/ae-en (Country-Language)
example.com/en-ae (Language-Country)
example.com/ae/en (Country/Language)
Is there any logic to deciding how to structure the language/country combinations or is is entirely a matter of personal preference.
Thanks!

Hi Andy,
thanks for your help. Sorry I should I have been more clear with my question- We basically have the following sites set up as subdirectories:
example.com/ae (United Arab Emirates)
example.com/sa (Saudi Arabia)
example.com (International - not country specific)
ae, sa, om, qa, bh are country identifiers
language identifies are "en" for english and "ar" for arabic. (The English and Arabic URL for each country is currently the same)
Using these identifiers above should I make the country website URLs as follows ?:
example.com/ae-en (UAE English)
example.com/ae-ar(UAE Arabic)
example.com/sa-en(Saudi Arabia English)
example.com/sa-ar(Saudi Arabia Arabic)
... etc for the country sites
and example.com for the (International site)
example.com/ar for the (International Arabic Site)
-
Andy is spot on.

Hi Bejan,
Your chosen language should be sat at the primary domain.
For example, if your are a Saudi based site that wants Arabic as the primary language, this shouldn't be sat in an identifier. Ideally, you want to have a primary site language as this is how most will do it.
www.example.com (Arabic Language)
www.example.com/en/ (English Version)Or...
www.example.com (English Language)
www.example.com/ae/ (Arabic Version)You need to also remember to set these correctly by using HREFLANG. This is what will tell Google which languages should be associated to which pages. Moz have a couple of very useful pages on this here and here.
I hope this helps a little.

Do old backlinks still help with new URL with 301 redirect? Also I added the www. How does this affect it all?
I changed my URL from exampledetailing. com to exampleautodetailing. com. It is redirected with a 301. Also, it is on Squarespace AND I opted to add the www. So will the old backlinks of exampledetailing. com still help the new URL exampleautodetailing. com or do I need to try and update all the links? Also, future links, do I need to include the www. or just the root domain of exampleautodetailing. com or even the whole https://wwwexampleautodetailing. com? I believe the www is considered a sub domain and a new entity on Google, so I am not sure how that works. Thank you!

Should I avoid duplicate url keywords?
I'm curious to know Can having a keyword repeat in the URL cause any penalties ? For example xyzroofing.com xyzroofing.com/commercial-roofing xyzroofing.com/roofing-repairs My competitors with the highest rankings seem to be doing it without any trouble but I'm wondering if there is a better way. Also One of the problems I've noticed is that my /commercial-roofing page outranks my homepage for both residential and commercial search inquiries. How can this be straightened out?

Geo-Targeting Boroughs/Neighborhoods in New York
Is there a way to determine which boroughs/neighborhoods are drawing traffic in big cities like NYC and LA?Google Analytics lists all traffic under the city name, so New York, NY, gets 90%+ of the traffic.

Do you use HREF lang tags when each page that is localised only exists in that language?
Hi, I have 2 questions I am seeking an answer for. We have a home page in english GB, we then also have products which are specifically served in US. For these pages where the phone number is american, the spelling is american, the address is american, do we need to implement href lang tags? The page isn't a version of another page in english, the page is only in the native language.Secondly, is it recommended to create a second home page and then localise that page for US users?I'd be really greatful if anyone has any pointers as googles forum doesn't explain best practice for this case (as far as I can tell). Many thanks

Reducing traffic from a particular country
We are having a quality/ relevance issue with some of our traffic. One of the problems is that we are ranking well in certain foreign countries, which is driving irrelevant traffic to our site (as we only really cater for UK residents). Is there any way to suppress our overseas Google rankings whilst retaining good performance in the UK? Thanks.

Yoast Local SEO Reviews/Would it work for me?
Hi everyone, I'm looking for some feedback on Yoast Local SEO, and if you think it'd work for our site. www.kempruge.com. Our site is a wordpress site, and there's nothing about it, off the top of my head, that makes me think it wouldn't work, but I've been wrong before. We do use All-In-One SEO, not the Yoast plugin, so I'm not sure if that's compatible.or would cause a problem? (The reason we use All-In-One and not Yoast is because that's what we had when I got here, and I'm worried what would happen if we switched). Also, we have three offices, and I need to be able to do local seo for all three. I know Yoast says it supports multiple offices, but I'd feel more comfortable if someone on here let me know from his/her experience that it did. Anything else you want to add about Yoast Local, I'm all ears! Thanks, Ruben

Is translating my SEO meta data to new languages worthwhile?
When translating a website to additional languages, is it recommended, for Google SEO purposes, that the keywords, re-written URLs, meta titles and meta descriptions of each page be translated as well; or have those elements been completely depreciated?
