Will changing a subdirectory name negatively effect local ranking?
-
We submitted a group of 50+ franchise stores into UBL to fulfill directory listings back in September. We are now looking at changing the some of the URL structure to include city names.
Example: website.com/store/store-name(not city)
to website.com/location/city-store-name
Will changing the subdirectory and resubmitting to the directory aggregators negatively effect their search results?
Thanks,
Jake

My pleasure, Jake, and good luck with the changes.

Good call on the 301s Miriam.
After the url site changes, we WILL be resubmitting to all the directories, G+, etc. Thanks for the additional feedback!
-
Thanks for the feedback Matt. My hunch is that short term there may be a bump, but long term having the city name of the business in the url structure could only help.
With all the flux at Google+ Local/Places and lack of support, it would seem the more obvious you could make your location across the page, the better.

Hi Jake, Ideally, if I were building a local business website from scratch, I would set up the page URLs like this: website.com/city-services Your example of what you want to change the names to look fine, too, so long as you are going to 301 redirect the old pages to the new ones. If you don't, you will lose any links and citations you may have built or achieved for those pages. Also, if this is going to affect the URLs linked from, say, Google+ Local to pages on the website, you'll to change the URLs in Google+ (or other directories) to the new URLs to avoid confusion. All this said, I'm on the same page with what Matt said about this. It's possible for pages with totally lousy URLs to do just fine, in my experience, but if you have a choice, it's nice to write them nicely.

This is a pretty common trick among the photographers I've worked with. I can say from what I've seen, there's no benefit to having a keyword in the link like that, but as far as changing, no, it shouldn't hurt you. Short term there may be some movement but that could be positive or negative, depending on about a billion other factors (how relevant to the cities are the page, are the other pages on the site, etc.) Google could love the changes, could hate them. From our experience, it's usually worth just setting it up how you want and letting Google figure it out from there.

Redirect Issue - Drop in ranking after CMS change
Hi Website - https://www.aasprint.com.au/ After we moved the site from wordpress to codeIgniter + angular there has been a huge drop in traffic and ranking. One of the thing we recently realized is the redirection - COULD THAT BE THE ISSUE? On the browser and sitemap the URL doesn't have "/" at the end When checked on redirection tool the URL seems to be redirecting to one with "/" at the end Attached are the screenshots. Also moz bar shows no redirection. However, the issue seems to be flagged by the site audit tool as 301 redirection. Not sure if it's the cause for the drop. What action to take? Any advice would be much appreciated. V7CNtqt j3dJ4TW

Should I optimize the login page? Will it affect the website SEO ranking?
I'm trying to resolve the site crawl issues that we have on our website. One of the links that has different issue types together is our login page. Currently we have two login pages that have the same content but different sub domains. **However I'm wondering if optimizing SEO on our login pages affects our website SEO ranking and if it's something better to do or not. ** To point out the details of the issues, the issue types that the logins pages have are "duplicate title", "duplicate content", "missing H1", "missing description", "thin content", "missing canonical tag" I'd appreciate your help, thank you!

Ranking dropped after changing title tag
I recently changed my company's site homepage title tag to make it start with our target keyword. The page was originally at page #7 or #8 and dropped to page #17 directly after I changed the page title. Is this normal? Is it's a temporary drop or should I change it back to the previous title.

Brand name not ranking in Google
Hi Moz'ers, Could you help me with something I cannot seem to figure out by myself. In June 2017 my company started a rebranding campaign. We've changed our brand name and launched a new website: https://spotler.com. Everything is going fine, but if you Google our brand name "Spotler" our website doesn't show up. How can it be? Our domain authority is 38. It would be wonderful if you could help me. Let me know if you need more information. Best, Simone

Changing my pages URL name - HELP NEEDED FAST
Hello, I need to change the URL name for a few pages on my site. The site was launched just recently, so it has no obvious ranking and traffic. My question is, what is the best practice for changing/deleting the page name? after deleting the page, should I go to Google webmaster tool and use URL Removal and remove the old page? I know that I have to also create a new XML sitemap file, but not sure about the old pages in google search result Thanks!

Recent Algo Change
I was wondering if anybody can shed some light on any recent changes to the Google algorithm in Australia. A competitor, www.manwithavan.com.au has always been number 1 for the most competitive search term in our industry "removalists melbourne". However, in the last week, they have fallen out of the the SERPS and are now (according to MOZ) ranking outside the top 50. As far as l can tell, they have a really well optimized site with good structure, great text and updated content. They are very active within social media circles and have some really good external links. Can anybody tell me why they would have been hit so badly. The reason l ask is that i want to make sure we don't make the same mistake. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Use of subdomains, subdirectories or both?
Hello, i would like your advice on a dilemma i am facing. I am working a new project that is going to release soon, thats a network of users with personal profiles seperated in categories for example lets say the categories are colors. So let say i am a member and i belong in red color categorie and i got a page where i update my personal information/cv/resume as well as a personal blog thats on that page. So the main site is giving the option to user to search for members by the criteria of color. My first idea is that all users should own a subdomain (and this is how its developed so far) thats easy to use and since the domain name is really small (just 3 letters) i believe subdomain worth since personal site will be easy to remember. My dilemma is should all users own a subdomain, a subdirectory or both and if both witch one should be the canonical? Since it said that search engines treat subdomains as different stand-alone sites, whats best for the main site? to show multiple search results with profiles in subdomains or subdirectories? What if i use both? meaning in search results i use search directory url for each profile while same time each profile owns a subdomains as well? and if so which one should be the canonical? Thanks in advance, C
