How can I avoid duplicate content when building a review widget?
-
My website has a profile page for each of the home improvement contractors who signs up. They accumulate reviews on those pages. I want to build a review widget to display our reviews on our contractors' websites. How can I avoid duplicate content issues for the reviews?
Example of a profile page with a few reviews: http://www.thehomefixers.com/members/425/waterheaters-plus-llc.php

I think you should use a review aggregator like YotPo. These will deliver reviews to your contractor's sites without duplicating the content because the content won't be in the source code. Any plug in you can design will prevent duplicate content. You will basically display the content without it being in the code. The only HTML the robot will see is the coding for the review system.
-
Thanks - the problem is that the remainder of the page is also likely to be somewhat duplicate - it's mostly NAP data, business tagline or coupon offers, which are likely to be extremely repetitive as these businesses often have dozens of listings, all with the same info. The reviews are really our only differentiating content from all their other listings.
If the reviews popped up on their sites as well (via our widget) would a link back to their profile page (part of the widget) be enough to indicate to Google that we were the original source? I don't think canonical tags will be an option.

"I want to build a review widget to display our reviews on our contractors' websites."
If you are going to be displaying it as a widget on their website, I'm not sure what duplicate issue you are expecting. You would not have the same reviews across mutiple sites if you are adding contractor-specific reviews to a contractor-specific site. Unless you are referring to having the review content displayed on your siet where they sign up, and also on their site as a widget. Even if that is the case, you will have so many differences between the two pages and surrounding supporting text I doubt you would see any if at all negative effects.
Duplicate content penalties are aimed at people who use multiple pages of exact or highly similar content to try and manipulate search engine rankings. Just by having a few reviews that are the same across a few pages I dont think you would be grouped into that.

Does it apply with content writen about a product, and the description writen inside the product caracteristics in my e-commerce store?
Right now I have the same info in the product info page, and the product in the store...
Should I write different info for both pages?
-
But would I be able to get the canonical tag on the client website via the widget code? Or I'd need two separate code snippets for installation
-
No, it would be for the whole page. It's good practise to have the canonical tag on anyway though
-
Can the canonical tag be applied to only a portion of a page's content? (basically, everything within the review widget?)
-
What percentage of page content would be duplicate?
I am asking because I remember seeing a video of our spiritual guide Matt Cutts addressing that, and he said at google they do understand content sometimes is quoted, cited, etc... And it all depends on how much text is duplicated when you quote, cite...
But unfortunately he was not saying how much is too much.
-
What content is going to be duplicated? The reviews?
The best way would be to add a canonical tag to the website. You need to identify the main page the content is going to be on then add the canonical tag. For example, If you have 4 pages with similar content then pick the page that has more authority and canonicalise the others to that page.
Here's more info on the canonical tag https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139066?hl=en

What is the best online reputation management software for generating legitimate Google (and other online) reviews?
Hello! Does anyone have a good experience with using an online reputation management tool to help generate online reviews for a Google My Business listing, Facebook, etc? The reason I ask about a review software is because of my client's age demographic (50+), so we need to have an automated system to request reviews from their clients and to make it simple for them to leave reviews.

Google Reviews & Third Party Reviews
Hi We have a third party review provider, but were also looking at increasing our Google reviews. However after more research, should Google reviews only be used on local listings? For organisations which don't have a physical location to buy from - is the solution to use organisation schema, which incorporates 'reviews on other sites' with the hope Google may show your Feefo review count? When checking similar companies - all seem to have the organisation knowledge card and not the local Google My Business listing. Is it worth pursuing extra reviews on Google My Business or not? Thanks!

Why does Google return 1 star reviews in local listings as the "most helpful"?
I have a client who has recently received two 1 star reviews on Google local (unhappy customer and unhappy customers boyfriend). This is affecting an otherwise flourishing business as these two 1 star reviews are displayed prominently when you search for the brand in Google. They have since received more positive reviews, however Google insists on displaying, what they term, the "most helpful" reviews first. Why are these 1 star reviews deemed "most helpful"? In all honesty, they aren't even really that helpful, with the latter verging on slanderous. We are in the process of reporting this one as it personally attacks a member of staff, however, whilst we tentatively wait weeks for a response, I wondered if anyone has any idea on how G decides which reviews are "most helpful"? When there is no option for other users to rate these reviews as helpful (such as on play store).

Publishing testimonials on your site that are from your Google + (or other review sites page)
Ive got a site with some good Google + Reviews and some other good reviews on other sites that id like to be able to publish on a testimonials page on our website, but im worried about being penalised for duplicate content. Any idea of the best way to get these reviews on to our website, i was thinking about placing the text in as an image, but id prefer to do something semantic if at all possible. (I know that some review sites have javascript widgets you can use to pull in your reviews but for most of the sites we are reviewed on they dont)

EKomi widget and Schema.org
Hi Everyone, I bet everybody knows eKomi. For their customers they supply widgets (javascript) which you can add to your html and displays the widget to your visitors. Some webshop alter the widget a bit and add extra html to the bottom of the widget: Company Name receives a 7.4 out of 10 out of 1100 reviews This code is dynamic and pulls data from eKomi.com. I was wondering what you guys think of this, is this spam? Will Google see it as spam?

Searching for "Company name" in Google will result in a SERP with both the company and eKomi on #1 and #2 with the same snippets based on the reviews on eKomi.com Let me know 🙂0 -
Too many reviews too quickly?
Is there any sort of guideline on this? Right now, we have very few google reviews. However, I've cross referenced a list of our happiest clients with people who have g+ accounts. There are at least 12 clients, I feel strongly would write us g+ reviews if I asked them to. I want to just get the word out today, but I'm worried if 8-12 reviews in a week would red flag us. I've heard that getting too many reviews to quickly can be a problem, but I'm thinking that more like 100 than 10, but I have no idea. Most of my competitors don't have any reviews, and the most any of them have is 10. I don't know if that matters at all either in terms of triggering a red flag. I'd appreciate whatever insight you all could give. Thanks, Ruben
